Yes, we know there is plenty of doom and gloom surrounding sport right now with most events getting cancelled.
However, there is one shining light……Golf!
On Monday the 16th March, we went LIVE from Crosland Heath Golf Club for the inaugural golf tournament in the brilliant new 2020protour.
The tour gets its name not from the year we happen to find ourselves in but rather for its forward-thinking as a mixed-gender equitable tour in which men and women compete for an equal prize pot.
The idea was the brainchild of European Tour player Chris Hanson and Adam Walker after last year’s Jordan Mixed Open and has quickly escalated into a full-blown tour with 22 events in total set to take place in 2020.
Fortunately, we were lucky enough to be right in the thick of the action for the very first event at Crosland Heath Golf Club and what a day it turned out to be.
Firstly, if you have never been to Crosland Heath before, then I implore you to go. Located just outside Huddersfield, the course spreads to the very top a hill with spectacular views over Yorkshire.
The course is a challenge itself with the Alastair Mackenzie layout playing short (roughly 6100) but with some wicked par three’s over some deep quarries that will test the nerves of even the heartiest sole.
18000 tune in
Right onto the action! We were overwhelmed with the openness and general good feeling from the players as we potted about with the cameras.
Everyone we came across was happy to give us a little time despite being in the midst of their rounds and despite Corona (there I said it) everyone was happy just to be playing.
It wasn’t just the players who were clearly engaged either as over 18000 people tuned in to watch with the live stream reaching over 36000 people.
In the end, Nicholas Poppleton stunned everyone with a stunning -7 round to take the victory whilst also adding eight birdies into the race to 100 birdies in which Mcclarrons Sport have put up a £20,000 prize fund.
Huge credit must go to Chris and Adam for arranging a brilliant Tour, Crosland Heath for hosting a wonderful event, and of course the list of sponsors who have made it all possible.
It’s now on to Fulford Golf Club for the next event on the 30th March and we cannot wait to bring you all the action LIVE.
